Blog 3: Turkey

SDG6: Water and Sanitation:
Turkey

Implementation Strategies:

• Preparing a National Water Plan that ensures sustainable
management of water resources, in terms of both quality
and quantity, as well as with an approach in which a balance
is sought between conservation and development.
• Continuously developing safe and clean drinking water
services across all urban and rural populations.
• Combating water violations/losses more effectively through
the enforceable penalties and incentive system.
• Developing affordable and sustainable financing models,
including a public-private partnership in investment and
management of drinking water and sanitation services.
• Continuing to support efficient irrigation methods in
agriculture.
• Modernizing irrigation infrastructure to reduce water loss,
• Strengthening coordination among public agencies for
effective management of water resources.
• Improving the monitoring and control of marine pollution
and increase sanctioning efforts.
• Raising awareness of agricultural producers to effectively
use water.

Monitoring Water and Sanitation:

Ø  National Monitoring Network, Basin Monitoring Programs: Monitors chemical and physico-chemical parameters, priority substances, known contaminants, biological quality components at 28877 monitoring points in rivers, lakes, passage, and coastal waters.

Note*: the cost of the implementation strategies is unknown.

                                                            Climate Change Impact:

Water Scarcity: agriculture must be planned through water-basin models due to water scarcity.
Climate Change Impacts on Water Resources and Adaptation Project: temperature, precipitation, water potential, water deficit/surplus projections were prepared for each basin up to 2100; groundwater potential and surface water level changes were identified, water budget was modeled and the impact of water for human consumption, agriculture and industry main sectors were analyzed.

Water and Sanitation Issue for Turkey:

There are three main focus areas for Turkey in relation to water and sanitation:
1.       Access to drinking water and sanitation.
2.       Effective management of water resources.
3.       Prevention of water pollution and improving water quantity and quality.

Note*: Water and sanitation are current challenges for the country.

Implementation Strategy Resources:

Ø  SUKAP: water and sanitation infrastructure project that launched in 2011.
Ø  Local administrators that support funds transferred from the central budget.
Ø  The Central Board of Basin Management:
·       formulates strategies and plans.
·       Take measures to ensure cooperation among sectors
·       Adopt an integrated basin management approach.
·       Achieve national objectives.
·       Fulfill international commitments.

  1. Hello,
I agreed with your view. yes, the water and sanitation are main priorities for every country not only Turkey. That is the basic need for human beings. providing save and clean water in rural and urban area. Development and use of proper water in agriculture field is important. Main issue are proper management of water, avoid water pollution and make qualitative.

  2. Hello Titiana,

I agree that water and sanitation our main priorities, or at least should be, for every country. Just like food water and hydration is in need for any population to continue. I found your post very educational, I was unaware about some of the things I read about turkey. I didn’t know that their water goals were specific because of the issues they have. This causing them to have the monitoring of chemical and physiochemical parameters to make sure their water is not contaminated.
